Blog 5 – Digital Transformation ReMIND : Reverse Mentoring in New Digital Age

Technology & time both are changing at a rapid pace. A technological change is an increase in the efficiency of a product or process that results in an increase in output, without an increase in input . In simpler words, someone invents or improves a product or process, which is then used to get a bigger reward for the same amount of work. The telephone is an example of a product that has undergone a technological change. It has undergone many different changes over the years that have made it more efficient. Processes or products, such as the telephone, move through technological change in three stages: Invention, Innovation & Diffusion. What if we are not ready for such changes, advancements ? The answer is very obvious, like many others it will take no time to get disrupted in this era. I have been working with one of the large MNC’s / corporates (Tech Mahindra) for close to 9 years now. As our organisation is the one with Purpose, encourages & gives an opportunity to implement the fresh ideas to all 120K associates part of the group.

In one of my interactions with CEO of the org. we were discussing as to how millennial can make an impact & help the top leadership stay relevant as in an org. like Tech Mahindra, we have almost 45% young crowd. Can this segment really make a powerful impact ? Answer is YES & that is how ReMIND was born. The idea was to propose the new mentorship model where rather than following the traditional approach of experienced one’s teaching the fresh minds, in this we lay a platform where all youngsters gets a fair opportunity to interact with the leadership & mentor them. The idea/model was accepted by the CEO, but the real challenge was to implement it in such a diverse firm so that all 120K associates could get the advantage of the same. Personally, it was like a Start up within an organisation for me. Taken this as a challenge & started with a small POC with Manufacturing Vertical , selecting 20 youngsters & 10 experienced leaders. Had connected mentor with mentee, wanted to check how open would be an experienced leader of say 15 years Industry experience be to learn from 3-4 Years in the Industry. To my experience, this was taken up very positively & leaders were quite happy with the sessions they were receiving from youngsters & at the same time, the millennial were excited as they were getting a fair opportunity to connect with multiple leaders across the org. Learning, most of the times has been unidirectional from a seasoned professional to an inexperienced learner. In this conventional model, there is dependency and expectation on certain older generations such as Baby boomers and X to be the mentors and the newer generations to be the learners. However, we are aware that the new generations bring certain talent and awareness for latest technologies and trends. Collaboration and learning among talent (irrespective of generation) are directly proportional to business. Any deviation of any of them can have a financial impact. Hence, we designed and executed a model through Reverse Mentoring, where the younger generations became the mentors and the open-minded, passionate Baby Boomers and X gen the mentees. This soon became a movement and brought together many new learners and new mentors in the most unexpected places. We also saw many fringe benefits in enhanced relationships, new networks, and unearthing of new young leaders. Reverse Mentoring came as a conduit to break the ice between multiple generations. Unlike the conventional ways to collaborate, Reverse Mentoring uses digitization to unify Tech Mighties and helps to understand young generation’s thinking and also making them the brand ambassadors for future. In a span of less that 12 months, there were 1200 + mentors on boarded & 500 senior leaders registered with 100+ topics being subscribed – A transformation that one has never dreamt of. ReMIND is a movement that is unshackling the silos between the generations in the organisation. The roadmap of Reverse mentoring is to enable all mid to executive level leadership are always learning & stay updated with the latest technologies & trends which inturn leads to help org. as a whole being relevant in the coming times. It has huge impact financially ( reduces the learning & training cost for the firm ) & over the brand as well ( helps in culture of collaboration, upbrining of new brand ambassadors, grooming of youngsters to leaders, diversity & transformation towards learning!

In this span of 2 years from starting the program from scratch to implementing it, I have realized the power of collaboration, the power of empowerment & the most important – The Will to never give up ! Whether we work for any organisation or our own, it is important for us to be the owner & taking the ownership ! I sincerely hope & wish this program will help many youngsters & as well the leaders.

Keep the child in you alive, Keep learning always ! (If you are part of Tech Mahindra, you can register via Would love to hear your thoughts on the power of Millennial – Feel free to comment !

Blog 4- Your Next Holiday Destination !

Many of us might not be aware of this place known as Taiwan, even I was clueless till the time, I was told by my organisation that for next couple of years, this is going to be my workplace, my home. It was then that I started exploring more , for Indians especially the place could be a total opposite in culture, cuisine, lifestyle. In this blog of mine, I will try to present my learning & the experience I carry for this place (as I write this blog, I am touching close to 3 years here ).We officially still call it “Republic of China” as they are still part of China, but trying to get Independence. I live in the capital city – Taipei well known for Taipei 101 – World Trade Centre of Taiwan. . Located in the northern part of the country, it’s comprised of twelve districts with a total population of around 2.7 million. It’s the cultural, financial, and political center of the island so any first-time visit to Taiwan should begin here.

While I was relocated to this place, it was a complete new adventure for me, as the main obstacle was the language – the official language being Mandarin. Few interesting points that I really want to highlight about this place, I shall try to mention below in short & crisp notes (though there is lot to be told about this place ) but my intent to write this blog is to help the first time travellers to Taiwan as a short guide.

The Time : Generally speaking, Taiwan enjoys mild weather year-round with an average temperature of about 23°C (73°F). The rainy months are from May to September, with June to August being the height of typhoon season. Avoid those months at all costs 🙂 if possible.  Ideally, shoot for late October to March if you can. The weather is cool and dry and air pollution is at a minimum.

The Travel (Internal) : Taipei has two international airports — Taoyuan and Songshan — but the vast majority of international flights are served by Taoyuan. You can get to the city from Taoyuan Airport by MRT, bus, taxi, or private transfer. Internally in Taipei : you have an extremely sorted transportation . MRT (Metro Rail Travel) , Bus are extremely well planned. We also have Uber available for fast transportation & local Taxi’s are very easily available.

The People : Whenever we visit any new country, new place – the very important aspect which we wish to always consider is ” How are the People”? You will be delighted to note that the people of Taiwan are extremely friendly, very welcoming & they go beyond their limits to help the new comers / tourist. They are very easily approachable & they do not mind speaking to you in little english which they can speak , though you can’t expect everyone to speak English but atleast the one’s in Corporate at fairly large designations understand & speaks English. Very warm in attitude, very caring & absolute great to have company !

The Infrastructure : Very well maintained Infra indeed. It’s not only well established but the people here maintain it very nicely – An absolute clean city – No DustBin concept : everyone needs to take care of their own garbage & once / twice a week you can use the municipality garbage trucks to dump the same .Highly established – earth quake prone Infra upto 8 magnitude Architecture is absolute Top class..

The Food / Cuisine : Taipei, has about 20 streets dedicated to food . Some of the famous one’s are Tofu, Bubble Tea, Sweet Potato, Pepper cakes, Dumplings, Fish Ball soup, The Hot Pot ( I am ofcourse mentioning the one’s which are not regularly available in India )If you happen to be in Taiwan, you must try the Bubble Tea, Tofu & Dumplings ! We also have the regular dish like Chicken, Fish, Pork etc. You also get to have Indian food here as we have good Indian restaurants also available.

The Places to explore: We have multiple must see places in Taiwan ( mix of beaches, adventure & architecture ) : some of the well known one’s are Taipei 101 ( known to be the tallest building in Taiwan ), Taroko National Park, Taipei Zoo, Sun Moon Lake, Jioufen, National Museum, National Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall, Yangminshan National Park, Kenting National Park, Fulong Beach, Lungshan Temple, Shi-Men Ting, (Night Market), Shillin Night Market, Feng Chia Night Market, Tamsui Fisherman Wharf & many other..

The Best Practices

  • Respect people from every nationality
  • Keep the roads extremely clean
  • Be welcoming, friendly in nature
  • Help & support travellers
  • Never cheat the first timers !

I hope to see you in Taiwan soon ( your next holiday destination ). This was a very short blog to Introduce you this beautiful place – if you love to know more, you can always get in touch with me ! Happy to guide & help !

Blog 3 -The Uncommon Man

Education is said to be the basic requirement for any field & to get the best in the education, unfortunately in the same field, the approach have always been complex & at the same time a costly affair. Still majority of the middle class family delivers good education system for their children. I come from the same set of class, a middle-class , for us getting into an International Schooling, was just not the trend then, an average good school with right teachers was always okay. Luckily, I got admitted in a very good school by my parents & it didn’t ended there – for an average student like me, I was absolutely in need for Tuition ( extra help )but my parents made it look affordable, though it was never easy for them. I think the Love was speaking there, I still remember going to extra class after the schooling & my father helping me with the transport. At that time we used to have a 2 wheeler at our place. Many -a-time, the timing was such that I used to get late in the evening while studying, & the Uncommon Man used to wait for me downstairs for me to complete the class. Multiple times, especially in rainy season , it used to rain heavily & he used to wait for me politely downstairs, May be the thrill of me getting right education made him feel good & reduce the pain of shower on him. If I imagine the role reversal today, I think it would not be easy for me to do the same, if I would ever do it: I would have told multiple times to change the timing, or to find an alternative & at time may even go to an extent to lose the temper, which brings me to the point of how ,we have become impatient & impolite. The reasons could be many, but the same was for the Uncommon Man. The reaction was absolutely different by him. I remember he used to bring the sweets every weekend so that my brother & self at home are happy, he used to join us for every celebrations like Diwali & Sankrantri, he used to be absolutely easy with our report card (marks), he have always encouraged us to explore things, he was always there to guide us, though he was absolutely loaded with work, stress & loans , . This brings me to a point as to how important it is to balance things both at work & at home. I feel, we as children are lucky to have an Uncommon Man who taught us to live with Integrity, respect every person we met, enjoy Life as it comes & not to ever give up ! They say there is always a gap between Father & a Son , but I believe, we were absolutely lucky that our Father was more of a Friend – I call him the Uncommon Man because I have never met a person who value family more than anything, who gave up everything just to make us happy – who stayed in the rains to get us to educated, who took Loans to get us settled – Who missed celebrations, but ensured we had sweets at home – Who was never involved in politics but always believed in Bonding, who was never after Money but always gave importance to family, happiness & Health, who was content living in a rented apartment & a well furnished Home equally, who respected his parents, his inlaws, his friends, his family more than anything else, who sacrificed his everything to establish his children, who never showed the troubles on face but always welcomed with smile – The one & only – The Uncommon Man of our Family – Our Loving Dad – 33 Years of your service will be indebted forever – With Lots of Love ! Always be the way you are , Our Hero !

Thank you is not enough for what you have given to our Family !

Blog 2- Passion before Purpose

Grit is that “extra something” that separates the most successful people from the rest. It’s the passion, perseverance and empathy that we must channelize & practice on regular basis in order to stick with our dreams until they become a reality. Majority of us know, know this & understand what it requires to reach there but unfortunately not many can stick to it & pursue the same. Reasons can be different to each one of us. So, the bigger & most important question to ask is ” What is more important, is it Purpose or Passion ?” 90% of us might be trapped in achieving our purpose of life, only 10% would go that extra mile to sustain & continue the passion. I am also the victim of the same, but I have promised to myself that sooner or later, I will go back & do what I love the most. I still remember, in my school days, I was more into Sports, Table Tennis (Ping-Pong) being at the top priority followed by Carroms & Cricket. Though, I continued Ping Pong from KG – PG, but silently it became the next priority after education , also it helped me realize my potential in the game. I was able to analyze whether this will be a bread winner or not, the moment we realize that this is not going to help live a life : passion was replaced by my purpose in Life. I had to move forward with Education being the first priority. It had its own benefits but somewhere or the other I placed the game at the side. Nevertheless, completed the Education – getting into Corporate Life was another leveler in my personal Life. I still remember in my initial years in the corporate work – I was keen, excited , more innovative but with time, things started taking a turn, I was getting used to the comfort zone & that is when I challenged myself & started shifting roles : it helped me give different perspectives, I got an opportunity to explore countries like Africa , Taiwan & China. The life is still kicking high but the question still remains the same – Am I chasing the Passion or the Purpose : the answer is clear enough at this moment, it is Purpose followed by Passion : Though I love the role, I am into -somewhere I feel there is a miss, somewhere I feel whether everything is worth it. This leads to another question : Is staying away from family for money, worth it ? Is it that all matters in Life ? May be , it would help give an extra bedroom but I think it levels down all at some point down the line. Life takes you to places, they say – I feel it is the choices me make that decides our path. Are we making the right choice at right time , is what matters the most.

When we have balance in our life, work becomes an entirely different experience. The passion can be moved to a whole new level of fulfillment & gratitude and that’s exactly when, we can do our best. Hence, it is absolutely important to analyze what we need & how much we need. There is a saying that, when you leave this planet, your bank balance should be zero, the amount that is left in your bank during your death is the extra effort done by you. May be some amount to your next generation is a wise saving, but we should not be carried away with the race of life & miss out on precious moments.

Don’t worry about what the world needs.  Ask what makes you come alive and do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive !

With this note, I wish all of you nothing, but the best to come, do prioritizeHealth, Family, Passion & Purpose !!! in the order written 🙂असली ज़िन्दगी उस वक़्त शुरू होती हैं, जब आपने अपनी ज़िन्दगी खुद लिकना शुरू किया हो !

Blog 1 -The Grandma!

As I try to pen down my first blog, I have been brainstorming as to which topic is the closest to my heart on which I can actually do justice, after few days of realization, it stuck to me that the direction of thought was wrong, rather than the topic closest to me, I should actually talk about the person who changed my Life. That leads to the title of my first blog – The Grandma ! It would be real unfair if I do not begin my story through her, as whatever I am today, I strongly believe it only because of that one lady who gave value to people more than anything in life selflessly. I still remember the days, when my mother used to take me to her place, drop me there and I used to spend my full day with my grandparents. I believe, lucky are the one’s who have got an opportunity to spend a part of the life with their grandparents. I was very lucky – I got a chance to spend my 30 years with them. One thing which I really cherished in these 30 years, is the selfless love : the affection without expectation, all good stories while feeding food ! If I know anything today about the history, It is only because of one lady – The Grandma ! The lady that never , ever, in my last 30 years missed wishing on my birthday & with a small polite question ” Do I get to see you today” : Whenever I used to meet her, one thing was sure- The lively smile on her face 🙂 She never used to skip asking me what would I love to eat today ! She taught me some valuable lessons of life which I will cherish for the rest of my Life. I will try to mentioned few of them below : this is my small learning from her – I hope you will love reading it….Need not necessarily agree as it is just our way of living life..can be different for all out there !

Value People / Time : She always used to say ” waqt ki kadar karna seeko” try to value the time or else time will not value you. It is important for us to note that time stops for none. I was always a closed person in my initial days , I used to avoid gatherings / events : she taught me why it is important to attend gathering, how important is it to meet people on timely basis. As they say, nothing is beautiful on this earth than a good relation. It needs to be maintained at all levels (personal & professional ). Hence, then I started attending social gatherings which helped me in my professional Life as well, today I am into Sales – if I recollect back – I think this was the most important lesson she taught me in a simple , yet powerful way ! Today, in every meeting – I reach 10 min earlier as she always taught me time should be respected.

Bad should not stop Good : She used to always say : this is life, you have to deal with it – Good & Bad both are obviously part of this journey. One bad shouldn’t actually stop the Good. She was absolute clear with the fact that everything has its own time, it will come to you as per your time zone – so please respect when it knocks your door. Her teachings was of so much importance to our closed family, that we actually implemented each of her teaching in our all phases of Life. It was my marriage on Dec 12th, 2018. Unfortunately, as God willing : we all had to let her go to her next amazing journey of Life on Dec 11th. We all were shattered as two events are at the same time in front of all of us. At one end, we have my marriage scheduled & at the other end, we have to let go our strength : but we remembered her teachings, Bad should not stop the Good, even her demise didn’t let us stop the marriage. That was her strength, that’s how important her teachings were for all of us. It was very tough for all of us especially my mother, but they did stand with good and I am sure her blessings are helping us all through. That is why, I strongly believe – Lucky are the one’s who have their grandparents : need to be respected at all levels ! We lost ours on Dec 11th – but blessing / teachings still are strong rooted in each one of us.

Pray timely / Respect Parents the most :She was very knowledgeable in all spiritual / religious chapters : She always used to help us follow every festival with cent percent traditions & culture. Without her, we all are and will always be incomplete. She always used to tell all the children at home to give time to parents, they are getting old, if you do not give time today to them, your children will not to you. Hence, her teachings made us & helped us to respect parents the most. I think, we are actually attached more to family because of her. She have been the pillar always.

Be Humble/ Be there at the Bad, if not at the good : She always used to tell us, we all understand life is busy & it demands a lot from each one of you. But no matter what, if someone is going through a tough time, it is your duty to be with that friend, person, family member, stranger – If you can’t be there for good, it is still fine, but you shouldn’t miss to be at their tough time. The meaning of ” A friend in need, is a friend indeed” was taught in a simple , yet powerful way.

Never Interfere : Live & Let Live : She always used to tell us , try not to interfere in others, it is always good to live a peaceful life than a political life. Respect your opinion, carry self-esteem & live life with Integrity. That’s all matters !

Committ, Contribute & Carry Empathy : She always used to say, commit your targets to yourself , stand on them, contribute to society as much as possible from your end & carry empathy for all – we do not know who is going through which struggles in Life.

By the way , we used to love having Dhokla & Samosa in the evening together at our home – I still remember in her last days , : how every thing seem perfect, happy till the time she just decided not to get up on Dec 11th 😦 after her sleep on Dec 10th. It is a shattering moment – we do not really know whose cycle of life ends when – On Dec 10 everything seem perfect, & Dec 11 everything incomplete ! Value people, Value relationship, Value time – Life is SHORT !

I used to call her Amma ! Presenting the best one below : the one that I will cherish for LifeLong & ever after !

Duniya na kisi ke liye ruki thi, na rukegi , sabse bada dharm samaj seva hota hain

Amma : You are always with us & shall be !
